Key Sectors and Clusters in Vienna

Vienna’s strategic economic priorities focus on life sciences, information and communication technologies as well as automotive and creative industries.

In the field of life sciences/biotechnology, the emphasis is on the Campus Vienna Biocenter where 1000 scientists from more than 40 nations work.  At present, there are 70 life science companies active in the Vienna Region. They employ 300 persons working in R & D. Life Science Austria (LISA) Vienna Region acts as a central consultancy and coordination point for researchers and businesses.


With more than 8,000 IT companies achieving a total gross turnover of € 20.8 billion and employing 73,000 persons, Vienna not only takes the lead in Austria but across Central and Eastern Europe. The high quality and strength of Vienna’s IT sector is based on the innovatory potential and the accessible markets, a competitive telecommunications infrastructure and first-class ICT supplier infrastructure. VITE (Vienna IT Enterprises) is an excellent instrument for Vienna to network the competence available in IT companies in order to initiate new and innovative projects and enhance the innovatory potential.

The Automotive Cluster Vienna Region (ACVR) has similar objectives for enterprises active in the fields of mobility, transport and new vehicle technologies. 

Creative Viennese, who wish to exploit their ideas and developments commercially are supported by “departure”, the economic promotion and service agency for companies of the creative industries domiciled in Vienna.
